Day 687 – Walking Without a Cane

It’s day 687 since Lidia had a hemorrhagic stroke. We are practicing walking without the cane.

One of our goals for 2021 has been to walk without a cane. Every once in a while, I’ll ask Lidia to give up her cane as she’s walking around the house. To make sure she is safe while walking, I’ll be there beside her, hovering, as she learns to walk again without her cane.

One day at a time. One step after another.

Mood

Today, we spent the day outside. It was a sunny day with the temperatures in the 60s. Lidia was comfortable sitting in the shade of a tree while I worked on preparing the chickens and their coop for winter. She’s a great supervisor and the chickens are happy.

Working in the Kitchen

I would have to say that the kitchen is probably Lidia’s favorite place to be.

She’s making sure everything is clean before we start cooking. I’m not the best at cleaning up after myself. Now that she’s getting around a little bit better, she’s a big help.

You’ll notice in the picture that she isn’t wearing a brace. This is day 3. She still needs to wear stable shoes because without them she can’t balance on her foot without rolling her ankle.

Walking Up Steps Alone for the First Time

It’s almost been two years since Lidia has had her stroke. She is becoming more and more independent. As she has gotten more independent, she has wanted to go out to the garage and back in on her own. A big thanks go out to the Students at the University who have helped Lidia gain confidence in going up and down the stairs.

We’ve built a railing going into the house from the garage so that Lidia can get into the house on her own. We are really proud of Lidia’s progress in her recovery from a hemorrhagic stroke. This is just another step in her stroke recovery.

We are so proud of Lidia and how much work she has put into her physical therapy to be able to do the things that she does.
